The Giddings Plaza, the heart of Lincoln Square, has a $400,000 renovation set to commence earlier than initially planned. This renovation includes an updated aesthetic, new landscaping, concrete repairs, and modern amenities installation.
With funds sourced from local property owners, the Lincoln Square Chamber of Commerce hopes to revitalize this central gathering space and boost its appeal to both residents and visitors. Alderman Matt Martin, who has been consistently allocating funds for this renovation project, expressed confidence in its economic benefits for the area.
A plan to close the plaza for renovations in August faced resistance from local businesses, prompting a change of start dates. Despite the colder temperatures and unpredictable weather, the construction teams expressed optimism in achieving their goals for an early November start.
Open and regular communication between Martin, local businesses, and other stakeholders has been instrumental in managing project challenges and ensuring minimal disruption.
Accelerating Giddings Plaza’s makeover

In light of recent changes, redevelopment will now start earlier, adhering to a phased development plan. This plan enables public access to most parts of the plaza during construction, segmented into five stages. The construction will initiate from the fountain side, gradually moving eastwards, with each phase expected to last about a week.
Local businesses have expressed positive opinions about the revised plans. Mark Bires, owner of Jerry’s Sandwiches, along with Trina Liu, founder of Little Flower Bakery, and others, praised Alderman Martin’s office for their updated approach, which they believe minimally disrupts commercial and residential areas. Their relief reflects the balance struck between community activities and city infrastructural needs.
The revamp also includes adhering to the American with Disabilities Act standards. Improved landscaping, new trash cans, and heightened usability, particularly for disabled individuals, are among the post-renovation enhancements. Alderman Martin reiterated his commitment to ensuring that the neighborhood continues to enjoy the charm of the Giddings Plaza for generations to come.
